When AI just agrees with you (and why that's risky)

You show the AI your plan. "Brilliant — really strong idea." Feels good, doesn't it? Now, be honest: was it actually a good plan… or did it just tell you what you wanted to hear?

Zac unsure about his idea while Zax wildly applauds it
Lovely for the ego. Not always the truth.

AI has a habit worth knowing about: it likes to agree with you. The polite word is sycophancy — it leans towards whatever it thinks you want to hear. It's not a conspiracy; it's a side-effect of being trained to be helpful and well-liked. It got so noticeable that in April 2025, OpenAI publicly rolled back a ChatGPT update for being too flattering and agreeable.

Why it matters: when you're deciding something — a purchase, a plan, how to word a tricky email — you don't want a cheerleader. You want the truth. A yes-man AI quietly nudges you towards whatever you were already leaning at.

How to get honesty out of it

Ask it to argue the other side. That's where the gold is.
It isn't neutral by default — it's agreeable by default. Once you know that, you simply steer for honesty.

One thing you can stop worrying about

Assuming the AI is "being objective." It's not deceiving you — it's just wired to be agreeable. That's not a flaw you have to fear; it's a quirk you can steer around, every time, with the three habits above.

Try it right now

Think of a decision you've basically already made. Paste it in and say: "Argue me out of this — what's the strongest case against it?" Best case, it confirms you're right, and now you actually know. Worst case, it just saved you from a mistake.

Zac clear-headed and decided, Zax giving an honest nod
A clear head beats a warm glow. Every time.

The Vault's "Make a Hard Decision with Confidence" System does this for you — it pressure-tests your leaning instead of flattering it.
